Jessica Nguyen murder trial: Prosecutors, defense give closing arguments
Closing arguments were heard Tuesday in the trial for a man accused of murdering his 12-year-old step-daughter.
Last May, Jessica Nguyen was found stabbed to death in the basement of her family's Gaithersburg townhome. The Medical Examiner said she was stabbed 45 times. Her step-father, David Hang, was arrested and charged with her death months later.
For more than an hour, inside a packed ninth floor courtroom, prosecutors laid out their case against Hang.
Prosecutors say cellphone records indicated Hang was within one mile of Nguyen's home, and his DNA was found on the sheath of a small sword in the home. They claim Hang was angry over a drawn out divorce with Nguyen's mother.
The defense argued that Hang was at a doctors appointment in Northern Virginia at the time of Nguyen's death. They say it would have been impossible for him to kill Nguyen within the 45 minute period the prosecution alleges Hang was unaccounted for. Hang's attorneys added the 43-year-old liked his step-daughter and had no reason to murder her.
Hang is facing first degree murder charges.
Jury deliberations began Tuesday, but they were sent home just before 7 p.m.
