Joe Biden calls to congratulate Paul Ryan
WASHINGTON (AP) - Vice President Joe Biden has telephoned Republican Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, congratulating him for being Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney's running mate.
The Obama campaign says that Biden encouraged Ryan to enjoy the day with his family.
Biden also says he's looking forward to engaging Ryan in what he's calling a "clear choice voters face this November."
Biden and Ryan are scheduled to meet in one debate before Election Day.
Romney announced Ryan's selection Saturday morning.
The 42-year-old Ryan is the architect of a controversial long-term budget plan to remake Medicare and cut trillions in federal spending.
He has served seven terms in Congress.
