Laurel mall groundbreaking Tuesday
The dirt is flipped and the sign has come down. Construction starts now on the brand new Towne Center of Laurel.
The long-awaited Towne Center comes at a of cost $130 million and will feature 400,000 square feet of places to live, eat, play and work.
"I can't announce names but we have a very upscale grocery store, we have a national sporting goods and national soft goods retailer,” says developer Brian Gibbons.
Developers say you can expect big names in dining and shopping. The center will also be anchored by a 12-screen Regal Cinemas movie theater.
"Where we have on Friday nights the movies and we’ll have concerts outside,” says Gibbons. “Really we want to make this a central, focal gathering point for the city of laurel."
County leaders say the Towne Center will also be an economic hub where millions of dollars will be spent, all while creating more than 1,500 jobs.
Prince George's County executive Rashern Baker celebrated in the occasion.
“Certainly this fits in with our economic development for prince George's county. It creates jobs and opportunities,” Baker says.
