Man commits suicide inside Hirshhorn Museum
August 20, 2012 - 04:27 pm
D.C. police are investigating an apparent suicide inside the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.
Police say a man was found with a gunshot wound to the head. Smithsonian Institution officials say the deceased was a security guard and shot himself with his service revolver shortly after 3 p.m. Monday in a locker room in the basement level of the building. Officials say the public did not witness the shooting, and no one else was injured.
The museum was evacuated and closed.
The Hirshhorn, located at 700 Independence Avenue, displays "modern and contemporary art and sculpture," according to the museum's website.
