ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Maryland House Speaker Michael Busch says the possibility of developing Internet gambling in the state will be under consideration in a special session next week.

The speaker briefly noted the possibility in a memo sent to members of the House of Delegates on Wednesday evening.

Busch, D-Anne Arundel, noted that an important component of the special session will be to ensure Maryland has a sustainable gambling program that is competitive with surrounding mid-Atlantic states.

In June, Delaware Gov. Jack Markell signed a measure authorizing online betting in Delaware.

Maryland currently only allows slot machine gambling at five locations. Lawmakers will be considering an expansion of gambling to include table games such as blackjack and a new casino site in Prince George's County.

In June, MGM announced plans for a mega casino and resort at National Harbor, but no new gaming facility can be built without the go-ahead from the state.
