Maryland's gambling expansion bill up for House debate

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP/ABC7) - The state of Maryland could be mere hours from widely expanding casino gambling.

Despite being called into the chambers more than two hours after a 2 p.m. scheduled start time, the House of Delegates convened Tuesday to consider allowing table games such as blackjack at casinos, and to permit a new casino site in Prince George's County.

The House Ways and Means Committee voted Monday night to reduce taxes for the operators of a new Anne Arundel County casino and a planned one in Baltimore.

The move is aimed at offsetting the economic impact of a future Prince George's casino near Washington. Voters would need to approve any gambling expansion.

The Senate, which passed a bill last week, is scheduled to convene at 7 p.m.
