Northwest D.C. carjacking leaves neighbors on edge
A Sunday morning coffee run for a man in a quiet Northwest D.C. neighborhood turned terrifying when he was carjacked and gunpoint.
Amid the manicured lawns of Northampton Street in Washington's Chevy Chase neighborhood, police say that a local lawyer came face-to-face with three gun-wielding teens in the driveway of his home.
The carjacking happened at about 6:30 a.m. when the victim, a 42-year-old father, pulled up into his driveway and was met by the suspects. They ran toward him waving a gun and yelling, "Give me the money!" according to police.
After the threats, the victim then threw his keys and wallet at the armed trio, who then jumped into his 2007 Audi A6 and drove away. The suspects are still on the loose.
Libby Martin, a mother of two who lives just a few doors down from where the attack happened, said that the stunning crime is an eye-opener.
"We are used to living in the city, but we are going to have to be more aware," Martin said.
Meanwhile, Felix Lapinski, a 40-year resident of the neighborhood, says he's never heard of something like this happening in the area.
"There are a lot of people from the World Bank, IMF and retirees like myself," Lapinski said. "It hits home when it is on your block."
Detectives are asking for the public's help in locating the victim's car. The license plate on the Audi has a D.C. license plate of CT5988.
