Stafford home invasion suspects at-large
The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a frightening home invasion in the county.
Gary Caldwell, a 67-year-old Vietnam veteran, told ABC7 he thought he was going to die when two suspects got into his home and tried to rob him at gun and knifepoint.
Caldwell says the attack happened Tuesday night at his home on High Street, in a neighborhood off busy Garrisonville Road.
"I was sitting on the couch watching TV, and I heard some noises going on," Caldwell said. "Two guys were pushing their way in, and they drug me through the house, into the living room and then held me down."
Caldwell adds the men were dressed in black nearly from head to toe.
“They had masks on,” he said. “If they walked up to me today, I wouldn't know who they were."
Caldwell says the men were both white and were skinny. One appeared to have some beard growth on the small part of his face Caldwell could see.
As of Wednesday night, neither suspect had been caught.
"They were completely heartless, and they did not care,” said Gary’s daughter, Stacy Caldwell.
Stacy says her dad has been through a lot in life, including a recent surgery for cancer of the liver.
He tried to fight back but was unable to stop the attackers or get ahold of their gun. When he tried to call 911, he says the men broke his phone.
The attackers appeared to be familiar with the Caldwell family, mentioning Stacy by name.
"He kept constantly saying, ‘Stacy says there's a safe here,’” Gary said. “I said, ‘Well, there ain't one.’"
Stacy says she won’t rest until the suspects are caught.
Gary believes they were about to slit his throat and kill him because there was no safe he could lead them to, but there was a knock at the door.
He says the knock scared the suspects, and they fled out the back door.
The woman who knocked, who asked ABC7 not to reveal her identity, said she had a nagging feeling all day that she needed to check on Gary, who is a friend.
She says she’s glad she listened to her gut. So is Caldwell.
"If it wasn't for her, they would have killed me," he said.
Anyone who has any information that could help catch the suspects is asked to call the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office.
