The National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses convention underway
August 7, 2012 - 06:51 pm
The nation's oldest gospel convention is underway in Washington this week. The National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses is taking place at the Omni Shoreham and draws hundreds of church members from around the country.
"It's the only kind of music that can have any style," said Edwin Hawkins. "You can have jazzy gospel, pop gospel, hip hop gospel."
The convention began nearly 80 years ago and was started by the late Thomas A. Dorsey who wrote the song "Precious Lord Take My Hand".
Today, singers of all ages attend the event. Organizers say more than 1200 people are participating this year.
