Two brothers killed in Winchester house fire, report says
Two young brothers were killed in a house fire in Winchester. The boys were aged 4 and 6.
Sources say a family of four - a mother, father and two children - lives in the house on Summit Avenue.
The fire was called in around 9:36 p.m.Thursday.
Neighbor Mary Kaylor says she saw Winchester firefighters rescuing the boys' other grandfather from a second-story window. But by the time they reached the brothers, it was too late.
“Even if you have one year or 41 years in the job, incidents like this, especially with children, you don't forget them,” Winchester Fire and Rescue Chief Scott Cullers says. “You cope with them so you can respond to the next call.”
But Chief Cullers can’t remember a call this devastating in Winchester in the last decade.
Other victims were reportedly taken from the house and are being treated for smoke inhalation and burns.
The Top of Virginia chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting at the scene.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
