Tyler Brett Mattingly, 17, killed in St. Mary's County fatal crash
There were very few signs Monday of the nasty car crash that took place on this stretch of Route 5 in St. Mary's county over the weekend.
The impact of what happened here is still fresh on the minds of many throughout this community.
Perhaps few places more than the St. Mary's County Sheriff’s office.
Tyler Mattingly, 17, spent the last 13 months of his short life as an intern at the sheriff’s department. His death sent a jolt through the entire department.
“It was difficult for us, the shock that somebody so young and full of promise could just be gone,” says Capt. Steve Hall.
Even though he was just an intern and so young, he had big responsibilities. He's been researching the history of the country's oldest sheriff’s department ahead of the 375th anniversary
Tyler was driving on rain soaked Route 5 Saturday when he lost control of his car. Deputies say speed and weather conditions contributed to the crash. His vehicle slammed head on into a car moving in the opposite direction.
“I was surprised, just tout he was too young. Didn't think it could happen to someone like that, says classmate Kaitlyn Waldron.
Tyler graduated from Glen Mills High School last year. The high school, just like the sheriff’s department, remember a young man who was smart beyond his age.
“He was in our golf team and was studying engineering. So very sad for our community and our school,” says principal Jeff Heible.
