Va. military moms' baby shower
Anna McComber' is 34 weeks pregnant. For her and her husband, pregnancy was a blessing.
In 2009, her husband drew was injured in Afghanistan. He was hospitalized for three years. Now, Anna cares for him herself, but friends and family are back home in Italy.
"When he got injured, we didn’t know if he would have kids or not, so this has been a good surprise,” McComber says.
Tuesday, Anna met dozens of women like her at a baby shower hosted by Operation Homefront, nonprofit that helps military families.
"Many of the woman that we serve may have husbands that are deployed during their pregnancy. So today was a way to thank them for their service to our country as well,” says Jamilia Shipman, executive director, Operation Homefront Metro D.C. chapter.
Virginia first lady Maureen McDonnell reflected on her life as a military wife.
"We just want to be able to tell them how much we cherish them, their family, their spouses, what they sacrifice,” she says.
And for Anna, it’s a comforting message.
“It's nice to know they care,” she says. “It's unexpected."
