Angelika movie theater opening in Fairfax
The movie industry is always changing, especially with the popularity of On Demand and Netflix.
Now a new theater in Fairfax, the Angelika, is trying to take movie watching back to its roots.
It looks contemporary - a multistory building anchoring a new mall at Lee Highway and Gallows Road. Eight screens will showcase art films, independents and classics in digital, as well as 35 mm. They also have a café and separate bar.
The theater also plans after-screening interviews and Q&A sessions. On-site management includes Mike Clark, a longtime critic for USA Today, programmer for the American Film Institute and contributing editor for Leonard Maltin's movie guide.
Some industry leaders believe the next wave of theaters must push the envelope to compete with Netflix and On Demand.
