Fairfax County Police say that the skimmer, which is a device used to steal a person's debit card information and personal identification number, was found on an ATM near the gift shop at the Inova Fairfax Hospital Cardiac Care Center in Falls Church.

The agency says that financial crimes detectives first learned of the theft when they started getting complaints from people that their ATM cards were being used fraudulently. Victims reported seeing charges for groceries, coffee and cash withdrawals that they did not purchase or make, police say.

Shortly thereafter, an employee at Inova Fairfax Hospital spotted a skimming device on the machine. Detectives are now concerned that there are many more victims who used the affected machine that have not come forward or even know that they've been the victim of theft.

No arrests have yet been made in the skimming operation and an investigation into the theft continues.

Authorities urge anyone who potentially used the ATM involved between late August and Sept. 12 to check their statements for any discrepancies. Potential victims can contact their bank and police at (703) 691-2131. They can also file a report online.
