BACON SHORTAGE?
Bacon shortage coming? Worldwide shortage of breakfast meat possible
One of the world's favorite breakfast meats may be absent from your plate next year, according to a British farming organization.
According to the United Kingdom's National Pig Association, a "worldwide shortage of pork and bacon...is unavoidable" in 2013. To avoid it, industry officials say that with the costs of pork rising and the herd sizes of farmers contract, a dearth of bacon is likely.
"British supermarkets know they have to raise the price they pay Britain's pig farmers or risk empty spaces on their shelves next year," said NPA chairman Richard Longthorp said in a statement released by the NPA.
The NPA says that drought conditions in several areas of the world, including North America, have also contributed to a spike in the price of grain, a major staple in pig-feed.
