Chong Chin Kim, former Prince George's officer, sentenced
GREENBELT, Md. (AP) - A former Prince George's County Police officer has been sentenced to spend just over five years in prison for conspiring to commit extortion in a scheme to sell untaxed cigarettes.
Chong Chin Kim of Odenton was sentenced Thursday to spend five years and a day in prison and ordered to forfeit approximately $2.7 million.
According to his plea agreement, between July 2009 and January 2010, Kim conspired with several others to transport and distribute untaxed cigarettes and alcohol in Maryland, Virginia and elsewhere.
The 44-year-old Kim and another police officer were paid to protect the goods.
The conspirators bought contraband cigarettes at least 33 times from an undercover agent, a total of more than 17 million cigarettes.
