WASHINGTON (AP) - Officials are opening a new center in southwest Washington that will serve juveniles who are on probation or awaiting trial.

The Southwest Balanced and Restorative Justice Drop-In Center opens Thursday.

It includes a probation office, a learning lab and a vocation training center focusing on food preparation, web design and silk-screening. Planned programs include tutoring, mentoring and education and prevention groups.

The center is an alternative to detention for youth living in southwest Washington who are awaiting trial and being monitored by probation officers.

It will also serve juveniles at risk of having their probation revoked because they are not complying with court-ordered conditions like drug testing, school attendance or mandatory curfew. This is the third similar center in the city.

The others are in the northeast and southeast.
