David M. Rohrer, Fairfax County's police chief, stepping down

FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) - Fairfax County's police chief is stepping down after eight years on the job to become a county executive for public safety.

David M. Rohrer will take over his new job on Oct. 20.

He will be responsible for overseeing the police department, the fire and rescue department, the office of emergency management and the public safety communications department.

Rohrer has served as police chief of Fairfax County, the largest local police department in Virginia, since 2004.

He helped oversee the construction of a new communications center for the police and fire department.

Rohrer also shifted the department onto a system of electronic report-taking and data management.
