The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has confirmed a 2.1 magnitude earthquake was detected in parts of western Carroll County and eastern Frederick County Saturday morning.

The USGS told the Baltimore Sun the earthquake's epicenter was three miles from Linganore, which is located Frederick County.

A 2.0 magnitude earthquake may not be felt, but it is large enough to be detected on geological equipment. Damage is rarely caused by earthquakes of that scale.

(AP) - The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting a 2.1 magnitude earthquake in eastern Frederick County near the Carroll County line, but area residents likely didn't even notice the minor quake. USGS reports the earthquake happened around 6 a.m. Saturday. USGS says the epicenter was about three miles from Linganore, in Frederick County, and about 11 miles from Westminster in Carroll County. Earthquakes with a magnitude of about 2.0 or less are usually called microearthquakes and are not commonly felt by people though they are recorded by instruments.
