Watkins Mill High School fight at football game draws police, pedestrian critically injured
Responding to a large fight at a football game at Watkins Mill High School in Gaithersburg, a Montgomery County Police cruiser was involved in a pedestrian collision Friday night, leaving a 15-year-old girl in critical condition.
Additional police units were called to Watkins Mill around 9:14 p.m. for reports of several fights. Eight officers were already working at the game against Clarksburg High School. Additional help was needed to clear the area of spectators.
As the responding police cruisers turned onto Apple Ridge Road with emergency lights activated, a female student stepped into the roadway, between two police vehicles, police say. She was struck by the second police car.
The 15-year-old was taken to a hospital in critical condition, police say. Late Friday, Montgomery County Police Captain Paul Starks said the girl was conscious and talking with doctors.
Saturday afternoon, a police statement says the girl, a student at Watkins Mill High School, remains in critical condition.
The officer involved in the accident has been placed on paid, administrative leave, which is standard protocol.
Police are asking anyone who witnessed the accident to call them at 301-640-2435.
