RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Retired Virginia Supreme Court Justice Henry H. Whiting has died at the age of 89.
Whiting served on the Supreme Court of Virginia from 1987 to 2002 and took senior status in 1995. He retired in 2002.
In a statement on Monday, Gov. Bob McDonnell said Virginia lost an "esteemed jurist, veteran barrister and public servant."
Virginia Lawyers Weekly said Whiting was a graduate of John Handley High School in Winchester.
He attended Virginia Tech and served in the Army in World War II.
Whiting earned his law degree at the University of Virginia and practiced law in Winchester until he was appointed to the circuit court bench in 1980.
