September 18, 2012 - 06:54 am
There are new concerns about heavy drinking among service members.
An Institute of Medicine Report says substance abuse among troops and their families has become a public health crisis, and that the Pentagon’s methods for dealing with it are out of date.
The report says about 20 percent of service members engaged in heavy drinking in 2008. Binge drinking increased from 35 to 47-percent between 1998 and 2008.
And prescription drug abuse is on the rise.
