WASHINGTON (AP) - A former U.S. Army Corps of Engineers program manager has been sentenced to six years in prison for his role in a $30 million bribery and kickback scheme.

Michael A. Alexander was sentenced Thursday in Washington's federal court, where he admitted to taking more than $1.25 million in bribes. Alexander, who pleaded guilty in February, was also ordered to forfeit $1.25 million and to pay $1.25 million in restitution.

He's among 11 people who have pleaded guilty in the massive bid-rigging scandal. The fraud involved contracts steered to favored contractors in exchange for kickbacks and the submission of phony and inflated invoices for payments.

The payments were split among multiple defendants and paid for luxury cars, fine jewelry and overseas trips. He's the first defendant sentenced in the case.
