Mrs. Obama's first stop on a two-city campaign foray into the key battleground state is downtown Richmond.
Later in the day, she will speak to supporters at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg.
The first lady had been scheduled to speak at the university in July, but that appearance was canceled following the mass shooting in Colorado.
Meanwhile, Romney will hold a rally at Van Dyck Park in Fairfax County.
Both are visiting the Commonwealth amidst economic concerns, which are expected to be a the forefront of Thursday's events.
