WASHINGTON (AP) - A historic library in Washington's Mount Pleasant neighborhood is reopening after a two-year, $11.2 million renovation project.

City officials, area residents and schoolchildren celebrated the completion of the renovations at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday.

The project involved restoring the interior of the 1925 building, expanding an upstairs children's room and building a rear addition.

Among the features preserved during the work are Depression-era murals of animals by children's illustrator Aurelius Battaglia, a native of the city who later worked on several classic Walt Disney films.

The Mount Pleasant Library is one of four in the city that was built with funding from steel magnate Andrew Carnegie.
