WASHINGTON (AP) - Maryland Democrats are holding a special tribute for the late Peace Corps founder Sargent Shriver at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C.

The Washington Post reports Gov. Martin O'Malley, House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer and Shriver's son, Mark Shriver, are among the speakers at a luncheon Tuesday.

Shriver was a Maryland native who led President Lyndon B. Johnson's "War on Poverty" and was the founding director of the Peace Corps under President John F. Kennedy.

Shriver also was the Democratic vice presidential nominee in 1972. Shriver died last year after struggling for years with Alzheimer's disease.

Others scheduled to pay tribute to Shriver include Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot, Rep. Elijah Cummings and Rep. Chris Van Hollen.
