A 24-year-old D.C. man accused of killing a puppy by dropping a nearly 100-pound cement block on the animal’s head has pleaded guilty to a charge of animal cruelty.

Sean Delontay Branch pleaded guilty on Monday in D.C. Superior Court. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Nov. 27 and faces up to five years behind bars and a $25,000 fine.

Authorities say King Tut, a 6-month-old puppy, was tied to a fence behind the Circle Seven Express store in the 1200 block of Mount Olivet Road NE in July.

Branch, who was angry at King Tut's owner, dropped a concrete slab on the dog when the puppy’s owner walked away, authorities say. The owner returned to find the puppy dead.

Scott Giacoppo, the Washington Humane Society's vice president of External Affairs and chief programs officer, issued this statement on Branch's conviction:

"Animal cruelty is a serious offense and I am glad to see that justice was done today. The Washington Humane Society's Humane Law Enforcement team will continue to investigate and prosecute those suspected of these heinous crimes. No dog, cat or any animal deserve to suffer the brutality that befell King Tut."
