Southern Avenue shooting: Prince George's County officers shoot, wound suspect
Two Prince George’s County Police officers have been placed on administrative leave as D.C. authorities investigate a shooting in Southeast that left a man critically wounded.
Prince George’s County Police say officers responded to the 800 block of Southern Avenue shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday for reports of a man walking through the Glass Manor community in Oxon Hill, firing gunshots in the area. Upon arrival, officers approached an armed suspect, and demanded that he put his gun down, but the man fired several shots at the officers, police say. The officers then fired back at the suspect, shooting him multiple times.
Police say the suspect was taken to a local hospital with critical injuries, and is undergoing surgery.
The two officers were not injured in the shooting, but have been placed on routine administrative leave. The officers are identified as Paul Schweinsburg and Khaled Rasuli
Police say a gun was recovered from the scene.
Since the shooting occurred in the District, the Metropolitan Police Department is handling the investigation. Police have shut down the intersection of Southern Avenue and Wheeler Road to Southern Avenue and Chesapeake Street while they search the scene. The closure is expected to last through the morning rush hour.
