Spotsylvania shooting leaves two dead
Investigators in Spotsylvania spent Monday night collecting evidence from a home that was the scene of a murder-suicide earlier in the day.
According to police, a 43-year-old David McVearry Anderson shot his sister, 51-year-old Laura Reeves, inside the home on McLaws Drive shortly after 1 p.m. Reeves made it outside, where she was shot by her brother again.
At one point, Anderson's 75-year-old mother, Jean Anderson, exited the home and was fatally shot by her son.
He then turned the gun on himself, authorities say.
"It's scary," said neighbor Sandy DuVal.
Duval says she had no idea someone capable of such a crime lived so close to her, adding it makes her nervous because of her grandson.
"I would have never let him out of the yard. It's something very upsetting, you never know," DuVal says.
Authorities say they had never been called to the home before, and neighbors add the area is normally safe.
Neighbors went on to describe Davis as a weird man who would sometimes sleep in a tent in the backyard.
Durham Chase's grandmother live in the neighborhood.
"He was strange, like he didn't know what he was doing and stuff. We could see him wandering around up the road sometimes," Chase says.
Reeves is in critical but stable condition at a local hospital. She is expected to survive.
The Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office says it recovered a rifle and a handgun from the scene.
A spokesperson says this is the county's first murder since Spring 2011.
