William R. Hite Jr., Prince George's schools chief, to leave early

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) - The outgoing Prince George's County schools superintendent is being released from his contract early.

The Washington Post (http://tinyurl.com/d2myv6e) reports the county board of education granted the request from William R. Hite Jr. on Thursday.

Hite's last day in Maryland is Friday. Hite resigned in July to lead the Philadelphia school system.

Since mid-July, he has been splitting his time between Prince George's County and Philadelphia.

He gave up $125,000 in severance pay to get an early release from his contract. Under his contract, he was required to remain in his job until Nov. 30.

Hite said he wanted to help with the county's transition and stay for about 30 days. Alvin Crawley, a former assistant superintendent in Arlington, has been hired as interim superintendent.
