Woman backed over, killed by her own vehicle in Bowie church parking lot
A woman was killed at a Bowie church Sunday morning when she was run over by her own vehicle as she was getting out of it in the parking lot, Bowie police say.
Officers responded to a call at about 11:28 a.m. and found the woman , who was described as elderly, lying on the asphalt motionless and without a pulse.
The woman was taken to Bowie Health Center. She was pronounced dead by Dr. Lyons, police say.
She was later identified as Marie Surowics, 86, a Bowie resident.
It happened at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church,1940 Mitchellville Road, in Bowie.
Witnesses told police the woman parked her vehicle and was getting out, but appeared to have failed to put it in Park.
As she got out, the vehicle began to drift backwards. The driver side door was still open and knocked the woman down.
As she fell to the asphalt, the vehicle backed over her and killed her, police say.
