Three fires reported in Prince George's County
Fire crews in Prince George's County were called to three separate fires Sunday morning.
Just before 1 a.m., a basement fire within a two-story home was called in from the 5200 block of Palco Place. Fire officials say the fire burned quickly from the basement to the home's roof, causing $50,000 in damage.
No one was injured. While the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, officials believe the home's furnace may have started the fire.
Around 3 a.m., crews were called to another basement fire. This one occurred in the 12800 block of Peachleaf Court in Upper Marlboro.
As firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, an unconscious woman was found in the home. She was taken to an area hospital, where she is listed in very critical condition.
No one else was injured. Officials believed the fire was accidental in nature.
Crews were called to the county's third fire around 8:30 a.m. when a fire was reported in the 3500 block of Windom Road in Hyattsville. When crews arrived, officials say, fire could be seen coming from the second and third floors of a garden-style apartment.
Several Good Samaritans alerted residents of the fire. No one was hurt, but a number of families were displaced.
Fire investigators say a space heater placed near combustibles on the second floor started the fire.
Prince George's County fire officials want to remind residents that as colder weather arrives, precautions should be taken in keep your home warm. Have your heating equipment serviced before winter arrives. Also, have your fireplace cleaned, and always keep space heaters at least three feet way from combustibles.
