Alice Till overcomes age to tackle first triathlon for charity
Alice Till as a youngster was not athletic. In fact, most girls her age would never even take a jog.
But now, in celebration of her 70th birthday, Till is training for a triathlon, and feeling great.
“Very good, surprised I'm doing this,” she says. “Sometimes I think, how old am I?”
She did her first marathon in 2000 and has done many since then. But even more special, Till is raising money for her charity of choice, the Leukemia Lymphoma Society, and she's raised almost $250,000.
“I'm doing this because I want to go out of my comfort zone, blood cancer patients are always out of their comfort zone,” she says.
Her friend Debby, battling leukemia, is her inspiration. She's had a bone marrow transplant and chemotherapy and is doing well today.
So Alice is training like crazy. She says she's comfortable with the running and biking, but the triathlon is her “Waterloo” because she doesn’t know how to swim.
She's taking lessons and trying to master open water swimming by June.
When she's not training, Till is a scientist and vice president with a pharmaceutical company.
And if you think it's too late to train like Alice, she says age is not an excuse.
“You're never too old to start,” she says.
