Apple iPhone users were largely not pleased after downloading the newest update—the iOS6 operating system. As part of the update, Apple said that it is using its default maps application in place of the Google Maps app that it was previously using.

The replacement was promised to offer turn-by-turn navigation with Siri, transit directions—through a third party, according to TechCrunch, and a 3D “Flyover” mode. However, users were left disappointed when the update brought more glitches than helpful features.

In response to customer complaints, Apple CEO Tim Cook issued a public apology on Apple’s website, saying "We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better."

TechCrunch reported that at the time of Apple’s announcement that they would be using their map feature over the Google map app, Google still had a year left on its contract to be the default Apple app.

“In my opinion it would have been better to retain our maps. It’s their decision, I’ll let them describe it,” Google Chairman Eric Schmidt said, according to TechCrunch.
