Arnold Schwarzenegger: 'I became an expert in living in denial'
Arnold Schwarzennager openly admits in his new book that he lied to his wife, Maria Shriver, about his affair with their housekeeper in which he fathered a son, Joseph. And through it all, for ten years, Joseph’s mother, Mildred, continued to work in the Schwarzenagger house.
“It’s worse when you start getting rid of people. It’s kind of like punishing somebody for having been in this situation,” said Schwarzennager.
Schwarzenagger says he later came clean with his wife when confronted by her during couples therapy. That led to the break-up of his 25-year marriage last year.
The 65-year-old also acknowledges it wasn’t his only affair, but he still holds out hope his marriage to Shriver will one day be restored.
“I’m sure Maria wishes we could all be together,” said Schwarzenagger. “I definitely wish we could al be together.”
His autobiography, “Total Recall: My Unbelievable True Life Story” also covers his rise to fame from his rough childhood in Austria to world champion bodybuilding and then to blockbuster movie-making before becoming California’s governor.
While Schwarzenagger is making the book tour rounds, his former press secretary, Margita Thompson, says she is not surprised by her former boss’ bold admissions.
“Well… he likes creating drama. I think it’s one of the things he’s trying to do to generate sales for the book. And it’s just, it’s the nature of who he is. He is someone who has a penchant and flair for the big, the dramatic, and sometimes that’s good and sometimes that’s less ideal,” said Thompson.
Schwarzennager says Shriver hasn’t read his book, but wishes him well.
