A new multi-million dollar project aims to connect 60 miles of bike trails from D.C. to Maryland.

Unveiled Monday, the plan includes a new bike path along the Anacostia River.

Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley said, "In a sense, these trails are really a metaphor for the choices we have to make as a region."

Funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation, the state of Maryland and the district, the $15 million project would connect both new and existing trails.

D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray calls it an environmental project with an economic impact.

"Well, I think it creates jobs because more businesses will develop along the Anacostia River as a result of cleaning it up," Gray explained.

Dan Millstein of Northeast D.C. says it's a necessary change. He lives near the watershed, but can't access the walkways from his home.

"Right now, it's actually kind of a pain to get to this part of the trail, or the existing trails," Millstein added.

By 2013, residents will have access to four miles of bike trail. Cyclists and walkers will be able to travel from the tidal basin to Prince George's County.

Construction is set to begin next spring.
