The victim, identified as Candelario Guevara-Guzman, was found on October 2 around 3:30 a.m. in a parking lot of the Garland Apartments, located in the 8600 block of Garland Avenue. Where he was found is about a two minute walk from his home. Police believe he was either going to the store or returning home when he was attacked.

“They dragged him after they hurt him,” says Elsy Ventura, his daughter.
Guzman, who was found around 3:30 a.m. by his sons with mental disabilities, is currently at a local hospital in critical condition and is unable to speak.

“They heard somebody who was trying to say something and they found my father,” says Ventura.

Guevara-Guzman’s family wonders what kind of low-life brutally beats a kind 72-year-old. He is from El Salvador and came to the U.S. 11 years ago to join his five D.C.-area children.

“He came for a better life, for a better opportunity,” says Ruth Guevara, his daughter.

“It’s inhuman,” says Ventura. “I can’t believe anybody could do that.”
The family believes this was a robbery attempt and says some of Guzman’s clothes had been ripped off.

Police say he is unable to communicate with investigators. On Wednesday, Montgomery County police handed out flyers. They say there are a lot of people outside at night and hope someone saw something. Police say it’s a rough area and some people may be scared to talk.

“Come on,” says Guevara. “Be brave and step up. Today it’s my father. Maybe tomorrow it could be one of your family members.”

“We need to find out who did this to my dad,” says Ventura. “We really need to find out.”
