WASHINGTON (AP) - The D.C. Council has unanimously approved an emergency measure to force greater transparency from the city's chief financial officer.

The measure approved Tuesday requires that the CFO's office share results of its audits by posting them online.

CFO Natwar Gandhi had defended his longtime practice of keeping the audits private to protect sensitive information.

He had said releasing them could give people a "road map" to exploit weaknesses in his agency.

The council's action comes after the resignation of chief tax appraiser Tony George.

Earlier this month, another official resigned from Gandhi's agency, citing the refusal of senior manager to release a revised version of an audit that found poor oversight of a tax bill database.
