Hurricane Sandy evacuation shelters: Local shelters available amidst Hurricane Sandy
There are several local shelters open and available in the area, due to Hurricane Sandy:
ARLINGTON
The Emergency Winter Shelter (EWS) at Courthouse opened Sunday, Oct. 28, at 3pm and will stay open as long as needed (it normally opens Nov. 1). A-SPAN is conducting outreach to let the homeless population know this resource is available.
D.C.
Five DPR Centers will operate as Shelter Recovery Sites starting at 10 am on Monday, October 29th. All regularly scheduled programs and activities are temporarily suspended.
The Shelter Recovery Sites are:

MONTGOMERY COUNTY
Beginning at noon on Monday, Montgomery County will open shelters at the following locations:
White Oak Community Recreation Center, people and pets, at 1700 April La. Silver Spring
The Activity Center at Bohrer Park for people only, at 506 S. Frederick Ave., Gaithersburg
The Mid- County Community Recreation C enter for people only, 2004 Queensguard Rd., Silver Spring.
Those going to shelters are advised to bring prescription medicines, critical phone numbers, and any comfort items such as personal pillows. Residents taking their pets to the White Oak shelter are advised that the shelter will be capable of housing dogs, cats, and small animals such as guinea pigs and rabbits. The shelter will be staffed by the County Animal Services Division and the volunteer County Animal Response Team (CART).
The homeless shelters -- Gude Men's, 600 E. Gude Dr., Rockville; Progress Place, 8210 Colonial La., Silver Spring; and Wilkins Avenue Women's Shelter, 12250 Wilkins Ave., Rockville -- are all prepared to serve those who arrive.
PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY
Prince George's County is opening a shelter Monday evening at Charles H. Flowers High School in Springdale.

Ritchie Coliseum, University of Maryland, 7950 Baltimore Ave, College Park, Md.: pets allowed.
The County will open additional shelters throughout the County based on the level of damage from the storm. The public will be notified as shelters open. Residents are advised to check the County website for shelter updates or call the 3-1-1 Call Center.
SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY
An emergency shelter is opening in Spotsylvania at noon at Thornburg Middle School. 6929 N. Roxbury Mill Rd., Spotsylvania, Va. 22551. www.spotsylvania.va.us or 582-7600.
FAUQUIER COUNTY
An emergency shelter will be opening at Liberty High School in Bealeton at 6 p.m. Monday. Residents requiring information as the hurricane approaches should call 540-422-8810.
