A man is dead, police say, following an altercation with another man in Brooklyn Park.

Anne Arundel County Police say officer found 50-year-old Nick Gartelman Sr. in medical distress when they arrived in the 6000-block of Ritchie Highway shortly after 9 p.m. Friday. The officers were responding to a report of an assault, but a preliminary investigation revealed that Gartelman was involved in a physical altercation with a white male prior to the officers' arrival.

Authorities say CPR and medical aid was performed on Gartelman, but he later died at a local hospital.

The cause of death is unknown, but police say they don’t believe this was a random act.

The investigation is ongoing.
