D.C. Councilmember Jack Evans confirmed Tony George's resignation on Monday. Evans held an oversight hearing last week on issues in the tax office, including the property tax assessments and the office's failure to disclose internal audits.

The reduced tax assessments were disclosed by The Washington Post. Chief Financial Officer Natwar Gandhi has said the settlements were necessary to avoid litigation.

The Post also reported that George's contract had been terminated from a previous government job in Georgia, which George did not disclose. Evans tells The Post that George "should be fired" if he lied on his resume.
