RICHMOND, Va. (AP/ABC7) - A 27-year-old Virginia state trooper has died after he was hit by an SUV while on special assignment directing traffic for the State Fair of Virginia.

State police say Andrew D. Fox was run down shortly before 10 p.m. Friday on Route 30 near Theme Park Way in Doswell in Hanover County where he was directing traffic leaving the Kings Dominion theme park and the State Fair

Fox was wearing a traffic safety vest when he was struck.

No charges have been filed against the driver of the SUV but an investigation is continuing. The two people who were inside of the SUV were unharmed, police said.

The state police superintendent, Col. W. Steven Flaherty, called Fox highly regarded and his death a "tremendous loss."

He was the 58th state police officer killed in the line of duty in its 80-year history.

Fox was assigned to Pulaski County. He was a Tazewell County native and served on the town of Tazewell force. He was a Virginia Tech graduate.
