Alexis Carwile found safe; Amber Alert canceled
An 18-month-old girl who was the center of an Amber Alert out of southern Virginia was found safe in Prince George's County on Friday morning, police say.
Authorities say Jennifer Carwile and Eric Black took their daughter, Alexis, from an aunt’s house in Halifax County, where she was staying, and left town after a court told them she would be turned over to the county's social services department.
Earlier, a court denied them custody of the child, according to the Halifax County Sheriff's Office.
An Amber Alert was issued Thursday after Alexis went missing.
The mother and child were found safe Friday morning at a relative’s house in the Lanham area of Prince George’s County. The toddler’s father, Black, was also located in Virginia, along with the vehicle - a brown 1985 Nissan Station Wagon with Va. tags XNJ9177 - police believed they were traveling in.
Sharon Black, the child's aunt, told ABC7 News that Carwile showed at her house in Lanahm around 10:30 p.m. Thursday with Alexis. She says Carwile told her that the state was going to take her daughter from her. Black says she agreed to let them spend the night at her home, but was unaware that an Amber Alert had been issued for the child. She says she had planned on calling social service officials once the office opened in the morning.
Around 5:30 a.m. Friday, Black says police showed up at her door, looking for Carwhile and the child, and took Carwile into custody.
Authorities believe that Carwile's relatives turned them in.
Police say both Carwile and Eric Black reside in Campbell County.
The child is currently staying with her aunt in Lanham, and will eventually be placed with the social services department in Halifax County, which is the county where the child was living with a relative, authorities said.
Black says the family plans to file for emergency custody of Alexis.
