Berryville family featured on 'Doomsday Preppers'
The end of the Mayan calendar, which is on Dec. 21, and the rash of extreme weather this year has some people worried about the end of the world as we know it.
The Blevins home in Berryville, Va. looks normal - most days.
"I don't know that the end of the world is coming, but we want to be prepared for whatever happens," Jay Blevins said.
His wife, Holly, added, "It could be a terrorist attack, it could be something happening in D.C., but we also have the tools if it's something else."
They are one of about 20 local families who are a part of a so-called "survivalist" group. They meet regularly and stock up, readying for the beginning of the end. The group also trains just in case a manmade or natural disaster should strike.
Patrick Troy trains members should society collapse into anarchy.
"They want what you have. They're going to come and take it, and they're probably not going to care about your safety when they come," Troy said.
Jay Blevins, a former Loudoun County sheriff's deputy, is featured in this week's episode of "Doomsday Preppers," which is on the National Geographic Channel. Jay has written a book and fears financial collapse in particular.
"I recommend people have silver coins that they can sell at certain points to get certain goods and services they need. They have gold maybe for the long run,' Jay continued.
The survivalist team also includes a knifemaker, a nurse and others with special survival skills.
The Belvins household is actually a stronghold location where other survivalist might come in the event of a disaster. They actually have six to eight months' worth of food stored there. Everything from dried carrots to ready-to-eat meals, like they have in the military.
They also have produce from the family's garden.
The Belvins also say they want to prepare their children, not scare them.
Jay added, "I have three kids to take care of, I have my wife to take care of and so I want to survive."
