WASHINGTON (AP) - D.C. fire officials are proposing a change to ambulance shifts that would remove 14 advanced life-support vehicles from service during overnight hours.

Fire Chief Kenneth Ellerbe announced the proposed shakeup during a Tuesday news conference.

He says that because of a reduced need for service between the hours of 1 a.m. and 7 a.m., the department wants to rely during that time on 25 basic life-support ambulances.

The ambulances would be assisted by firefighters who are trained as paramedics.

He says the redeployment makes sense in terms of resources since the majority of calls for service come during the day.
