Iran sanctions tightened after overwhelming Senate vote
WASHINGTON (AP) - The Senate has voted to tighten sanctions on Iran, targeting its energy and shipping industries.

The vote was 94-0 Friday and reflected continued congressional efforts to cripple the Islamic Republic's economy to thwart its nuclear ambitions.
The package of penalties by Sens. Bob Menendez and Mark Kirk was attached to a sweeping defense bill that the Senate hopes to finish next week.
The legislation would designate Iran's energy, port, shipping and ship-building sectors as entities of proliferation and sanction transactions with these areas.
In a letter to lawmakers, the powerful American Israel Public Affairs Committee urged senators to back the legislation.
