Luel Hayes convicted of killing Rahiem Moore
The jury convicted a District man of second-degree murder Friday in the July 2009 slaying of Rahiem Moore.
Prosecutors say Luel Hayes, 43, shot and killed Moore, nicknamed “Spot,” three years ago. Before the murder, Hayes, who was angry with Moore, lay in wait by his parked car in the 1000 block of Columbia Road NW. Moore was shot five times in the dark parking lot and left to die next to his car.
Hayes is no stranger to crime. Police say he sexually abused a young girl that same year. After the assault he allegedly said to the girl, “If you tell, you already know, I killed somebody named Spot.”
Hayes could spend up to 50 years behind bars. Sentencing is scheduled for February 8.
