Montgomery County contemplating bus-only lanes
WASHINGTON (AP) - Some lanes on busy roads in Montgomery County would be converted to dedicated bus lanes under a proposal being considered.
The Washington Post reports that the proposal, supported by county transportation planners, is intended to help ease traffic congestion. Planners expect that with bus-only lanes, many commuters would opt to take the bus instead of drive and that travel times wouldn't increase significantly.
The County Council would have to approve the proposal. The issue is expected to arise during planning department meetings this week and public hearings in February.
Congested thoroughfares including Rockville Pike, New Hampshire Avenue, Route 29 and Georgia Avenue might see the biggest benefit from bus-only lanes, according to planners.
