Today’s pop-cuture playpen finds Chris Brown and Rihanna together in Germany, “A Charlie Brown Christmas" on vinyl, a “scared” Oprah, many other things, and the mystery music video.
NAP TIME: Or something, anyway, per E!, “Nobody's business, huh? After hopping on a plane to meet up with Chris Brown in Berlin Wednesday, Rihanna made no secret that the duo was still spending time together. "Dis (guy)....... ?#BartObsessed," Rihanna tweeted Saturday evening, along with an Instagram snap of what appears to be a shirtless Brown lying face down on a bed that has a Simpsons comforter on it.” http://eonli.ne/10SYpvv
MEANWHILE: This guy is priceless, per Us Weekly, “Twitter is Chris Brown-free -- for now, at least. The controversial "Don't Wake Me Up" singer, 24, deleted his official account on the micro-blogging account over the weekend following an extended, often explicit Twitter war with singer comic writer Jenny Johnson.” http://usm.ag/XVllwq
HOT JAZZ ALBUM: Disguised as Charlie Brown, per the Los Angeles Times, “Originally recorded in 1965, Vince Guaraldi's soundtrack of "A Charlie Brown Christmas" was re-released last month for a third time in various formats including cheery green vinyl for record-philes. Its connection to the most genuine and heart-warming (if vaguely depressive) Christmas special ever released makes it one of the most beloved holiday albums recorded — and the latest remastering makes it sound that much brighter.
But there is a not-so-hidden message to "A Charlie Brown Christmas," and it's . . . the broader message of jazz carried by Guaraldi's evocative score and how a nearly 50-year-old cartoon acts as a potential gateway drug for any generation that falls under its spell.” http://lat.ms/ShgNM1
OPRAH: Her star isn’t as shiny as it used to be, the New York Times, “And without a regular presence on daytime network television, she cannot steer traffic to her other products as easily as in the past. Her magazine, in particular, has experienced a decline in advertising revenue and newsstand sales since the talk show finished. “She’s still Oprah. But she’s still struggling,” said Janice Peck, an associate professor of journalism and mass communication at the University of Colorado who wrote the 2008 book “The Age of Oprah.” “I think she’s scared. . . The possibility of failure, it’s quite scary.” http://nyti.ms/V1QHKj
LOOK WHO’S BACK: Familiar faces all around, per Rolling Stone, “The Rolling Stones began their 50th anniversary tour with the biggest possible bang on Sunday night, as a host of special guests joined them for a hit-packed show in London's O2 Arena. Former Stones comrades Bill Wyman and Mick Taylor returned to the ranks, while Mary J. Blige and Jeff Beck were also on hand to help with the celebrations.” http://bit.ly/Qk6bw6
A MURKY FUTURE: Another “Who shot J.R.?” per Deadline, “Larry Hagman, who died Friday at age 81 from cancer complications, was in Dallas filming season 2 of TNT’s Dallas. He had completed shooting a number of episodes, believed to be six, before his death, and will appear in the 15-episode season two of the series, slated to premiere Jan. 28. As of now, things are fluid and it is unclear how his passing will affect the production on the show.” http://bit.ly/10uILHq
HOLIDAY BOX OFFICE: Hits, hits and more hits, per The Wrap, “The holiday movie season is off to a record-breaking start after blockbusters ‘Twilight: Breaking Dawn –Part 2’ and “Skyfall” powered the biggest Thanksgiving weekend ever at the box office. With Oscar front-runner “Lincoln” continuing to over-perform in terms of expectations and awards hopeful “Life of Pi” off to a strong start, the overall box office hit $288 million and easily eclipsed the previous standard of $268 million set in 2009.” http://bit.ly/TorFYg
HALLE BERRY: Of a brawl, per Radar, “The L.A. County Department of Child Protective Services will be formally re-opening an abuse investigation involving Halle Berry and Gabriel Aubry's daughter, Nahla, following the Thanksgiving brawl between her father, Gabriel Aubry, and her mother's current boyfriend, French actor Olivier Martinez, RadarOnline.com is exclusively reporting.” http://rdar.co/10GnxGA
CAN’T TOUCH THIS: Not even you, Bieber, per YouTube, “Global sensation PSY and his wildly popular "Gangnam Style" music video surpassed Justin Bieber's "Baby" as the most viewed music video (and overall video) of all time on YouTube. As of noon Saturday, the viewcounts stood at 805 million to 803 million.” http://bit.ly/UMThW8
OBIT: Just the facts, per The Hollywood Reporter, “Emily Squires, a six-time Daytime Emmy Award winner for directing episodes of Sesame Street, died Nov. 21 at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York of unknown causes. She was 71.” http://bit.ly/R7YURz
THE WHAT?: Oh yeah, that, per indieWIRE, “The 22nd annual Gotham Independent Film Awards go down tonight at Cipriani Wall Street in New York, the first competitive awards show of the season. Indiewire will be on the scene offering minute-by-minute (ish) coverage, but in the meantime we figured why not offer a preview of how things might play out.” http://bit.ly/10XXARX
