Shooting reported near Walmart store in Laurel, manager injured
A Walmart store manager was shot during an apparent robbery in the store's parking lot in Laurel, police say.
ABC7 has learned that the 28-year-old man was accosted outside of the store at 3549 Russett Green East and forced back inside by a lone gunman. The business was robbed of cash and once back outside, the store manager was shot once in the chest by the gunman.
Mike Pfaltzgeraff with Anne Arundel County Fire said that they got a call shortly before 4:30 a.m. for a report of man with serious, but non-life threatening injuries from a gunshot wound. He was transported to the Prince George’s Trauma Center. The suspect, described as a masked white man, got away and a burned car was found nearby on Hammerstone Road. Police are investigating whether the shooting and burning car incident are related.
Laurel Police spokesperson Pete Piringer says the shooting happened in the vicinity of Maryland City, near the intersection of Route 198 and Baltimore Washington Parkway.
Police blocked off the entrances to the shopping complex where the Walmart store is located and officers could be seen searching the parking lot.
The store reopened around noon.
Walmart employees were visibly shaken Wednesday morning.
Wolley Wilson comes every morning to pick up her son after his night shift. She knows he wasn't the one shot but she waited nervously.
“I just want him to call and tell me, ‘Mom - I'm ok. Meet me outside,’” she says.
